New Pet Owners
If you have a new puppy or kitten and are looking for a great new vet, here’s everything you need to know.
Early Finish Puppy Vaccination
By now you’re probably familiar with the terms “C3” and “C5” vaccination for puppies. You may think that a C5 is the same no matter where you go for your puppy’s vaccination. This is definitely not the case. In fact, there are different brands of C3 and C5 puppy vaccines available, each with their own unique safety profile and effectiveness at protecting your puppy from nasty diseases.
At My Local Vet we only use the Nobivac brand of puppy vaccines because they offer excellent protection against disease AND can be given as an “early finish” vaccine.
What does early finish mean?
Early finish means your puppy will only require a single Nobivac vaccine from 10 weeks of age to be fully vaccinated. This brand of vaccine yields such a good immune response that a third vaccine is not required!
“But the breeder said..”
Don’t be disconcerted if this information contradicts what the breeder said. We’re veterinarians – we do vaccines. Breeders do breeding.
“But my puppy’s vaccine book says the next vaccination isn’t due until 12 weeks of age!”
The minimum interval between vaccines is 2 weeks so as long as your puppy was vaccinated at 8 weeks or earlier he/she can receive the Nobivac early finish vaccine at 10 weeks of age, making the 12 week vaccine completely redundant!
Why is this so important?
It’s important because the sooner your puppy is fully vaccinated the lower the overall risk of contracting disease AND the sooner they can roll around at the beach, play ball at the park, enjoy weekend hangs at your favourite café and most importantly SOCIALISE WITH OTHER DOGS!
It’s vital to your puppy’s development that they are appropriately socialised within their critical socialisation window, and this window closes at around 14-16 weeks of age. Their interactions within this period shape their understanding of normal social behaviour for life. By allowing them to have controlled, positive experiences with the world around them within this window (including interacting with other dogs, new people, other animals, and new environments), you will increase their chances of developing into a socially well-rounded adult dog.
Here are some other fantastic facts about the Nobivac vaccine:
- It’s guaranteed to protect your puppy from contracting deadly parvovirus
- It cross protects against ALL STRAINS of parvovirus
- It’s the only vaccine in Australia that will prevent shedding of parvovirus into the environment
- It has an excellent safety profile
